Dental implants are artificial roots that are anchored to your jawbone and support the permanent replacement teeth. These new posts are made from titanium which bond naturally and securely to your existing bone structure, forming a root that is not only permanent but in some cases can be even stronger than your natural one. They allow you to replace your smile in a very normal and beautiful-looking way, such that nobody will ever know you have a replacement tooth.
Dental implants can sometimes be placed in a single visit. Depending on the amount of bone present, sometimes bone grafting is needed to improve the area where the implant will anchor. This may require additional visits to complete. Initially, our board-certified periodontist, Dr.Orlich, will evaluate your teeth and surrounding tissues and will develop a unique plan to fit your needs. He will then install the new implant. This process is easy and usually can be done under local anesthetic.
Following the implant, your gums will need some time to heal. It also takes a few months before the implant integrates into and bonds with your jawbone. During this time, you may be given something temporary to wear so you don’t feel like you are missing a tooth, either something called a flipper, a temporary crown or healing cap, as determined appropriate for your situation. When your jaw and gums are healed, you will then be fitted with your new permanent tooth, which will have been built and sculpted to match your existing teeth perfectly.
Just about anyone with healthy teeth and gums is a good candidate for dental implants. If you have any health conditions, whether they are gum-related or general health issues, you should address these before having implants. Dr. Lowery and the other Avery Ranch dentists will evaluate you for any problems you might have and advise you if there is anything you need to know.
Dental implants can replace a single tooth, a couple of teeth, or even all of your teeth. They can be cared for with brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits, just like natural teeth.
