Cerec Q & A

What is a CEREC Crown?

Typically, having a crown placed requires at least two, and sometimes several, visits to the dentist. Initially, you receive a temporary crown while a mold of your teeth is taken and a lab is commissioned to create a permanent tooth. The replacement is placed at another visit which could be weeks later. This is sometimes necessary in order to monitor the health of the tooth. Sometimes, however, if the tooth is a good candidate, the crown can be fabricated in the office and delivered the same day. Some people choose this option due to time constraints, travel or personal reasons.

CEREC is a specialized technology that can save people time by providing a permanent crown in a single visit. The new crown will be precise, matched to your teeth in form, shape, and color and always look, feel and function just a natural tooth.

How Does CEREC Work?

CEREC technology makes use of the latest advancements in CAD/CAM technology which has been used for many years in the drafting and engineering industries. This technology allows our dentists to take an optical impression of your teeth by scanning in a manner similar to many tiny photographs of your teeth. Your crown is then custom made for your teeth by a computer while you wait right in the office. Everything happens in the office the same day, and you go home with your new crown.

What Are the Advantages of CEREC?

The most obvious advantage of a CEREC crown is the speed and convenience of getting a sturdy, permanent and natural-looking crown while you wait in a single office visit. In addition, you will not have to wear a temporary crown, which means there is no risk of it coming loose or getting lost between appointments. Your new crown is designed with computer precision, meaning it will be perfectly matched to your mouth in every dimension.
